LABOUR PAIN: KNOW WHAT’S NORMAL

30th of January, 2022

  • Labour changes the person: posture, verbal communication, risk perception. Physiology looks magical.

  • The three levels of Labour Pain: cognitive, emotional, visceral: how can we reinforce the person’s coping with normal pain;

  • Labour pain is not just pain, just like labour is not just a cervix;

  • Hormones, behavior and environment. What if we talked about hormones as symbols and archetypes?

  • Role of labour pain;

  • Physical aspects of pain;

  • Pain as a birth guide and protection for both mother and baby;

  • Letting go and giving up to the birth process;

  • Pain as an endocrine system stimulator

  • Intermittent pain causes production of Catheholamines-oxytocins-endorphins-prolactine vs chronic stress/Pitocin induction;

  • Freedom of movement as a natural reaction;

  • Giving up all resistance;

  • Psychological aspects of pain;

  • Pain as an expression of psychological pain of separation;

  • Pain as an element of personal transformation;

  • Pain as an energetic and sexual stimulator;

  • Physiology of pain;

  • Pain relief tools.

WHEN EXCESS OF STRESS HITS IN LABOUR:

NEW WAYS TO HELP

27th of February, 2022

  • Environment as a modulator of labour patterns

  • Spoiler: if you are attending birth, you are the environment of that birth

  • Stalled and obstructed labour under a woman friendly perspective: are invasive interventions always necessary?

  • Stress during pregnancy: biological effects on mother, baby and family;

  • How to deal with labour & birth, integrating the PNEI approach (PsychoNeuroEndocrinePhysiology approach);

  • What’s PNEI approach?

  • Parasympathetic v/s Saympathetic response to stress;

  • In labour a good stress or a distress?

  • How to detect, how to intervene?

  • How hormones and Autonomic Nervous System work together in the direction of birth (opening) or Distocias (closure);

  • Understanding the neuroendocrine meaning of the different types of cervix (firm, swelling, closing during contraction, not responding to contractions) and how to promote health through a systemic view;

  • Clinical skills: what do we look at in the woman, how do we know that the process of birth is normal?

  • Autonomous Nervous system of the uterus;

  • Adrenergic uterine contractions: their systemic meaning;

  • Uterine Metabolic Acidosis during labour: an underestimated cause of 25% of C-Sections during labour: how to prevent it, recognize it and correct;

  • Autonomic innervation of uterus and cervix. Uterus and cervix as “sensors” for environmental stress.

THE SECOND STAGE OF CHILDBIRTH:

NEW PARADIGM FOR A RESPECTFUL CARE

27th of March, 2022

  • What if the vertex is visible but the woman doesn’t feel the urge to push?

  • What if the cervix is still present but the woman feels the urge to push?

  • Massages to improve the pelvic floor competence;

  • Massages to release pelvic and uterine tensions. Treatment to rebalance the hormones of labour;

  • Releasing inferior uterine segment;

  • Releasing cervical tension - treatment to rebalance the hormones of labour

  • “And now PUSH!”: myths, expectations, common “shared ignorance” about the competences of the pelvic floor;

  • Let’s follow the baby’s voyage within the pelvis;

  • The Yoni as a threshold: biology and its symbols in the long term after birth;

  • Tear and dystocia prevention;

  • Evidences on “Hands off practice”;

  • The role of vagina in protecting the baby from cerebral palsy;

About Anna Maria Rossetti

Anna Maria Rosetti

Independent Midwife, SpB®AT, Author, Lecturer, Director of the Elemental School of Midwifery Art, Florence, Italy, Director of the Editorial Board SEAO Edizioni and Vice Director of the trimestral journal “Donna&Donna, il giornale delle ostetriche” Ed. SEAO, Florence

Anna Maria Rossetti has been a midwife since 2004, and a lecturer for The School of Midwifery Art in Florence, for the University of Milano Bicocca, as a guess for the University of Bournemouth, UK and for many Hospitals in Italy and abroad: mainly Portugal and Israel. She is invited to congresses and quoted as inspirational speaker internationally.

Anna accomplished her postgraduate two years education with Verena Schmid in 2009 and then continued her study regarding the clinical and practical implications of Psychoneuroendocrinoimmunology during pregnancy and birth. She became Director of the same school in 2016. Anna Maria developed her clinical experience in difficult labours with attention to the autonomous nervous system by working in many different settings: from hospitals to homebirths, from Europe to war territories in the Middle East.

Anna Maria is as well the Project Leader of a new branch of the SEAO named “SEAO-Rise,” which aims to spread and develop a woman friendly culture and raise awareness toward women’s human rights, both by educating midwives and helping women regain confidence with their bodies, cyclicity and sexual passages. She strongly believes in compassion, education and in the transformative power of biological sacred passages: altogether they can shape the social and cultural value of women and children in the eyes of the world.

Anna worked as a missionary in Afghanistan, in 2010, leading a maternity center on behalf of an NGO operating for the health care of women living in war territories.

In 2012 to 2013 she was Coordinator Midwife in the Midwives Led Unit (MLU) of Guernsey, UK.

Anna Maria earned a Master degree in Manual Therapies and Posturology in 2016, expanding her knowledge of the fascia and the treatment of childbirth related scars. She attended the full one year training course in Psychophony with Elisa Benassi in 2015, that has deepened her understanding of the role of voice, breath and diaphragm during pregnancy, childbirth and perineal re-education after birth. Anna became a Spinning Babies®Approved Trainer in 2019, after completing the SpB®AT education training with Gail Tully in Minnesota (USA).

Anna actually works as an independent midwife, taking care of post traumatic birth experiences, treating childbirth related scars under both the physical, symbolic, emotional point of view and raising consciousness towards human rights in childbirth. She teaches both midwives and doctors the interconnections between neuroscience, environment and stressors, in the cognition that uteruses and cervixes are environment’s sensors, thus affecting both professionals and families during the experience of birth.

Publications
Anna Maria created and co-authored the publishing series “Gli Elementali”, Scientific manuals targeting professionals which aim to bring the Salutogenic and PNEP perspective into the professional’s educational books. Her first book “Gli esami in Gravidanza”, 2019, brings a practical approach to a woman centered care during pregnancy and is being used in many Universities as a text book.

Anna Maria contributed to the book, “Physiology of Birth”, 2014 Spandrio, Regalia, Bestetti, which is being used as a text book in the midwifery schools all over Italy as well.
Anna Maria published several articles as a regular collaborator for the midwives' journal, D&D, edited by SEAO
